When I was putting together “Bellini and the bellini” I really wanted to include a screen grab of lexicographer1 Kory Stamper’s notecard for “bellini.” I remembered seeing it on-screen very briefly during an interview she gave, but I couldn’t remember where I saw the interview and so I couldn’t take a screen grab of it and so the post was published without it, etc., etc., et al. Sad!
Last weekend I spent some time cleaning up my bookmarks. In the process I came across the link to said interview, and was finally able to take a screen grab of the card to copy/pasta here. Rad!
I love a good behind-the-scenes look at how the generally unconsidered is undertaken, approached, accomplished. Catch the full interview:
Notes, etc.
- A lexicographer is someone who compiles a dictionary. Contrary to assumption, the dictionary reflects the actual usage of language by society, it doesn’t prescribe it. Watch the interview above, or read Kory’s book, Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries, for more.
