Olivia Laing at/on home

“I’ve never felt so fed by a place that I live in, it’s really nourishing.” So opens writer Olivia Laing in her home tour with NOWNESS. As someone who has chosen “nourish” as their word of the year for the last three years in a row, and who struggles with the concept of “home,” that line really resonates with me.

Her whole home really resonates with me. Her space is beautiful. The books, the art, the abundance of life throughout—not just the plants and flowers and garden but also the lives so very clearly lived and enjoyed and documented and treasured and celebrated by her and her husband.

Her home is fun, and full in the very best way. It’s a space that feels both welcoming and personal, and that radiates light, warmth, intention, love, and a certain sense of security and ease and pleasure in knowing and being one’s self.

What I like best is that her home is not trying to be anything it’s not, or for anyone other than who it’s for. It is exactly the vision I have for my own space and, by extension, my own self.

Every time I watch this video I feel so charmed and delighted, and inspired to cultivate a home that nourishes my being, is protected by a pop culture patron saint or spirit (Harry Styles, of course), and that reads as a love letter to my life.

I especially love that last take—your home being a love letter to your life.
